KAREN REETZ

Owner - Technician

Hello!  I am Karen Reetz, owner of Mid-South Hair Removal.

After seeking freedom from unwanted hair for years, electrolysis finally put an end to my daily battle of unwanted hair.  I promise you…. I understand the struggle.

Creating Mid-South Hair Removal gives me the opportunity to help people gain confidence in their appearance by permanently removing unwanted hair, using the only 100% permanent, FDA approved method of hair removal. Say goodbye to hiding behind your hair or covering your face in the company of others!

I am a graduate of California Electrology Academy’s 600-hour program where I trained in Thermolysis, Galvanic and Blend.  I am licensed by the State of Tennessee.

When I’m not in my studio making people feel fabulous, I like to spend my time with my family including our 2 rescue dogs, Haddie and Murphy.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR ELECTROLOGY
& LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Considerations and tips for choosing the hair removal method that works for you and your needs.

ELECTROLOGY

Electrolysis involves the insertion of a probe into each hair follicle to deliver electric currents that destroy the hair root. It is the only permanent method of hair removal.

There are three methods of electrolysis: thermolysis, galvanic electrolysis and blend. Each method uses a different type of electric current.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Laser hair removal offers long-term hair reduction, as opposed to the permanent hair removal offered by electrolysis. It can be used on almost all parts of the body. It is most effective on light, medium, olive, or dark skin with dark hair. It is generally ineffective on blond, strawberry blond, white or gray hair.

To maximize the effectiveness of this treatment, stop all methods of hair removal other than shaving or depilatory creams at least 10 weeks before treatment. Shaving and clipping may be done up to 2 days before treatment.

YOUR HEALTH HISTORY AND MEDICATION

We will work with you to identify any contraindications from your health history and medications that might impact the selected hair removal method.

YOUR HAIR AND SKIN TYPE

For electrolysis and laser hair removal, your hair color and skin type will affect the recommended method for long-term or permanent hair removal.

A combination of electrolysis and laser hair removal are generally recommended; however, for individuals who have light hair (blonde, strawberry blond, red, white, or grey hair), and those with dark skin, electrolysis is the only method that should be used for hair removal.

ADDITIONAL HAIR REMOVAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Managing Pain: Electrolysis and laser hair removal feels a bit like getting a tattoo. We have several recommendations if you are concerned about pain. Options for pain management may include distraction through video, music, conversation, virtual reality, oral pain medication, topical anesthetic (e.g. EMLA, Zensa, BLT, Tetracaine).

  • Managing Expectation: Results of hair removal can differ by individual.. It is important to keep in mind there will be varying results, side-effects and limitations of the treatment for each individual.

  • Sticking to the plan: Attend hair removal treatment sessions as planned and notify us if any changes occur in your diet and hormones so your treatment plan may be adjusted.

FAQ ELECTROLYSIS

WHAT IS ELECTROLYSIS?

Electrolysis is the only 100% FDA permanent hair removal method. Using state-of-the-art technology, a small amount of electricity is gently applied to the base of each follicle. This process destroys the hair growth tissue, therefore the regenerative ability of the hair follicle is permanently eliminated.

HOW DOES ELECTROLYSIS WORK?

A very fine sterilized filament is inserted into the hair follicle, which is a natural opening in the skin. Once the filament has been inserted, a small amount of current is applied that cauterizes the papilla, which is the tiny capillary responsible for causing the hair to grow. The current loosens the hair within the follicle, so with tweezers the hair slides out effortlessly. It is important to note that the hair is not being tweezed by force. You do not feel the insertion into the follicle or the removal of the hair. The blood supply to the hair is diminished with each treatment, and subsequent hairs grow back finer. Eventually the blood supply to hair is completely destroyed, and the follicle cannot produce another hair.

IS ELECTROLYSIS SAFE?

Absolutely!
We follow the American Electrology Association (AEA) standards for infection control which ensure electrolysis is performed under the highest standards.

WHAT DOES ELECTROLYSIS FEEL LIKE?

Every client reacts differently to treatment. Most clients feel nothing more than a warm sensation Very rarely is electrolysis intolerable.
Your electrologist will adjust the amount of current as much as possible to accommodate everyone. Topical anesthesia is available over the counter (check with your physician) and can be applied if desired.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Immediately following treatment, there may be a slight redness and/or swelling which usually disappears within a short period of time.

ELECTROLYSIS VS. LASER – WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Electrolysis is the only 100% FDA-approved permanent hair removal treatment. Laser hair removal treatments are not approved by the FDA for permanent hair removal and are considered hair REDUCTION.

CAN I STILL WAX AND PLUCK?

Waxing and plucking are temporary are methods and can actually increase hair growth in hormonally dependent areas such as the upper lip, chin, breasts, and abdomen. We ask that you clip hairs or shave in between appointments while undergoing treatment.

CAN PREGNANT WOMEN HAVE ELECTROLYSIS?

It is perfectly safe to treat pregnant women, but the breasts and abdomen are avoided after the sixth month of pregnancy.

CAN HAIR BE REMOVED FROM ANYWHERE ON THE BODY?

Yes!
Hair can be removed from almost any part of the body.
Common areas include the hairline, eyebrows, top of the nose, cheeks, side-burn area, upper and lower lip, chin, throat, neck, shoulders, back, chest, breasts, abdomen, arms, legs, bikini line, hands, feet, toes, fingers, and ears. Hair on the eyelashes, inside the nose and the ear canal are only treated under the supervision of a physician.

ARE THERE ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WHEN ELECTROLYSIS IS NOT SAFE?

Yes!
Unfortunately, I cannot work on clients that have pacemakers, defibrillators and the lower portion of the body of those with diabetes due to poor circulation.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NECESSARY?

Electrolysis requires a series of treatments over time. The length of time varies from person to person and is dependent on many factors such as the density and coarseness of the hair.  Many hairs will be permanently removed after the first treatment, while others will require additional treatment to achieve permanency.

FAQ LASER

HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO I NEED?

For permanent hair reduction, you’ll need to schedule a series of appointments. The lasers will target hair during the growth phase. However, your hair will reach this phase at different times.

As a result, you’ll need more than one appointment to target every hair in the treatment area.

The number of treatments you’ll need will depend on your:

  • Hair density

  • Skin type

  • Treatment area

  • Goals

AM I AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

You’ll be glad to know that 90% of patients who are considered good candidates report hair loss after three to six sessions.

Hair removal treatments work best on fair skin and thick, dark hair. Patients with darker skin will likely require more treatments. People with blonde, light-colored hair might have a difficult time with this treatment option and maybe a better candidate for electrology.

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS?

Laser hair removal is considered a low-risk treatment option. However, you might want to have a patch test before your first appointment if you have sensitive skin. This patch test can determine if your skin responds negatively.

You might experience:

  • Irritation

  • Itching

  • Swelling

  • Redness

  • Discoloration

It’s normal to expect some redness and itching at least 48-hours after your treatment.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?

Cynosure Elite iQ

IS DOWNTIME NECESSARY?

Make sure to keep an eye on your treatment area a few days after your first appointment. The treatment shouldn’t impact your normal routine. However, it’s best to avoid:

  • Perfumed products

  • Intense heat or sunlight

  • Waxing

  • Chlorine

  • Tight clothing

Avoid these for at least 48 hours after your appointment.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

Please shave the day before or day of your treatment.  Your skin needs to be it’s natural skin tone.  No sun, tanning beds or self-tanner.  Please come to your treatment with clean skin (no lotions or makeup)
